1950s–1960s: Early Years of West Indies Dominance

  • 1958 –  1st Test, Kensington Oval:

Match Drawn.

The first official encounter between both sides came in 1958 in the West Indies. Although the match concluded in a draw, this marked the beginning of their fierce rivalry. 

  • 1958 – 2nd Test, Port of Spain: 

A win was achieved by the West Indies won by 120 runs.

Batting first, WI scored 325. Pakistan fought back strongly to reach 282 but faltered in the final innings, losing by 120. Rohan Kanhai and Everton Weekes led with the bat, while Roy Gilchrist took the bowling honours.

  • 1958 – 3rd Test, Kingston

West Indies won the match by an innings and 174 runs.

It was an auspicious start for Pakistan in the debate in 1958, when they suffered a shuffle from that very onset. Batting first, Pakistan registered 328 (Imtiaz Ahmed 122). West Indies responded with a record-breaking 790/3 declared, led by Sir Garfield Sobers, who scored 365* not out. Pakistan were dismissed for 288 in their second innings.

Throughout the 50s and 60s, the West Indies and Pakistan had a tough rivalry, with both winning several matches, thereby establishing a competitive battle in their first encounters.

1970s: Pakistan’s Fightback

  • 1975 World Cup (ODI), Edgbaston:

West Indies won by 1 wicket.

Pakistan scored 266/7 (Majid Khan 60). Clive Lloyd and Deryck Murray guided WI to a last-over win with Murray staying unbeaten on 61. It was a classic World Cup thriller.

  • 1977 – 2nd Test, Trinidad:

West Indies won by 6 wickets.

Pakistan made 180 in the first innings with Wasim Raja scoring 65. Mushtaq Mohammad took 4 wickets to bundle out WI for 316. Pakistan scored 340 in the second innings, while West Indies completed the run chase, thanks to Gordon Greenidge (70) and Roy Fredericks (57).

1980s: Even Battles & World Cup Clash

  • 1983 Prudential World Cup – 2nd Semi-final, London

West Indies won by 8 wickets

In this match, West Indies won by 8 wickets. Pakistan batted first and scored 184, thanks to Mohsin Khan (70). Viv Richards (80*) and Larry Gomes (50*) led the game for the Windies as they completed the run chase of 188. 

  • 1984-1985 Benson & Hedges World Championship – 2nd Semi-Final, Melbourne

Pakistan won by 7 wickets.

Mudassar Nazar’s 5-wicket haul helped Pakistan to bundle out West Indies for 160; Pakistan chased it down dramatically, with Ramiz Raja (60) and Qasim Omar (42*) guiding to run chase. This marked Pakistan’s growing strength against the West Indies in the group stage. 

  • 1988 – 1st Test, Bourda, Georgetown:

Pakistan won by 9 wickets.

WI scored 292, but Pakistan came back strongly with 435, courtesy of a century from Miandad. Wasim Akram’s devastating reverse swing blew away the Windies in the second innings (172). Pakistan were able to chase down the tiny target of 32 with great ease, registering their first Test win in the Caribbean.

1990s: ODI Intensity and World Cup Pressure

  • 1992 World Cup, MCG:

The West Indies won by 10 wickets.

Having made 220 in the first innings, Pakistan would have thought they had a slight upper hand, but Haynes and Lara never lost their opening stand in the run chase. It was a tough loss in what ultimately turned out to be Pakistan’s World Cup-winning show..

  • 1993 – ODI, Sharjah:

Pakistan won the game by 6 wickets. 

The Windies were bowled out for 71 runs, providing an opportunity for Wasim Akram to run away with 5 for 15, including a hat-trick. Pakistan did not take even 20 overs to chase the target. In the 1990s, the ODI power tussle was tilted in favor of Pakistan, whose fast bowlers increasingly dominated.

2000s: Pakistan Rise in Bilateral Series

  • 2005 – 2nd Test, Kingston:

Pakistan won by 136 runs.

WI batsmen had a 30-run first-innings lead, but the bowling attack was able to dismiss them for just 143 in the second. While this gave Pakistan a target of 280, they easily chased it and leveled the Test Series.

  • 2008 – ODI Series, Abu Dhabi:

Pakistan won the 3-match ODI series 3–0.

Younis Khan scored 191 in all three games, and with him, Umar Gul’s nine wickets meant the West Indies stood no chance of recovery. Chris Gayle’s left dive would be his single attempt, racking up 235 runs.

2010s: Pakistan Dominance in All Formats

  • 2010-2011 ICC World Cup – 1st Quarter-Final, Dhaka:  

Pakistan by 10 wickets.

West Indies were bowled out cheaply for 112 with Afridi getting 4/30, and Kamran Akmal (47) and Mohammad Hafeez (61) stood in for a partnership of 113 runs to help Pakistan complete the chase in 20 overs to qualify for the semi-final.

  • 2016 – ODI Series, UAE:

Pakistan won 3-0.

WI lost the 3-match ODI series to Pakistan. The Shaheens won the first game by 111 runs using the D/L method, thanks to a century by Babar Azam. They won the second match by 59 runs, again thanks to a hundred by Babar Azam. Azhar Ali (101) and Babar Azam (117) helped the Shaheens to clinch a victory by 139 runs in the third game. 

  • 2017 – T20I Series, West Indies:

Pakistan won 3-1.

Shadab Khan announced his arrival with match-winning spells. Young guns, including Fakhar Zaman and Hasan Ali, made the difference.

2020s: Continued Rivalry and Emerging Stars

  • 2021 – 1st Test, Kingston:

West Indies won by 1 wicket.

WI lost nine wickets while chasing 168, with tail-enders sealing a thrilling finish. Kemar Roach’s composed finish snatched the victory from Pakistan.

  • 2021 – 2nd Test, Kingston:

Pakistan won the game by 109 runs.

Shaheen Afridi took 10 wickets in the match. WI collapsed in the 4th innings under intense pressure. The series ended 1–1.

  • 2021 – T20I Series, Barbados & Guyana:

Pakistan 1–0 (3 no-results).

Rain spoiled the series, but Pakistan defended 157 in the only finished game, with Babar Azam scoring a composed fifty.

  • 2021 – T20I Series, Karachi:

This was a 3-0 win for Pakistan.

Pakistan won the first game by 63 runs, the second by 9 runs, and the third by 7 wickets with 7 balls remaining. Mohammad Rizwan, Babar Azam, Haider Ali, Mohammad Wasim, and Shaheen Shah Afridi were crucial players for Pakistan in the series. 

  • 2022 Pakistan v West Indies, Multan:

Pakistan won 3-0.

Pakistan won by 5 wickets with 4 balls to spare in the first game, thanks to a century by Babar Azam. In the second match, Men in Greens produced 275 in the first innings, while they restricted West Indies to 155, gaining a 120-run victory. In the 3rd match, Pakistan won by 53 runs using the D/L method. Guided by Shadab Khan (86), Pakistan gathered 269, West Indies were dismissed at 216, thanks to Shadab Khan’s 4-wicket haul. 

  • 2025 Test Series in Pakistan (2 Matches):

The series stood at 1-1.

  • 1st Test: Pakistan won by 127 runs. Noman Ali and Sajid Khan shared 9 wickets as West Indies faltered in their chase of 202.
  • 2nd Test: West Indies bounced back, bowling Pakistan out for 154 & 133 in the first and the second innings. Jomel Warrican’s 9-wicket haul was instrumental in leveling the series.
