Match Highlights

  • Temba Bavuma scored 82 off 96, Matthew Breetzke scored 83 off 84, and Heinrich Klaasen scored 87 off 56 balls with 11 fours and three sixes to guide South Africa to a massive score of 352/5.  Following a 119-runs second-wicket partnership and finding some form, Klaasen’s powerful knock, which included two continuous sixes off the bowling of Shaheen Afridi in a 20-run over, propelled South Africa past 350.  Corbin Bosch (15 not out off 9 balls) and Kyle Verreynne (44 not out off 32 balls) were good supporters and added important runs down the stretch.
  • Pakistan’s Bowling and Fielding Issues: Shaheen Afridi dismissed Wiaan Mulder (2) and Tony de Zorzi (22) while Naseem Shah (1/67) dismissed Klaasen as Pakistan bowlers struggled to contain South Africa’s batting performance. Khushdil Shah, who finished with figures of 1/28, dismissed Breetzke. Mohammad Hasnain went for 80 runs without picking up a wicket. South Africa’s batsmen capitalised on some poor fielding, including a boundary slopped by Shaheen Afridi in a reverse sweep from Klaasen.
  • Pakistan’s Record Chase: Pakistan scored 353/4 in 49 overs. The innings was anchored by Mohammad Rizwan’s 122 not out off 128 balls (10 fours, and 2 sixes) and Salman Agha’s 134 off 103 balls (12 fours, and 4 sixes), who put together an amazing 260 runs for the fourth wicket off 229 balls. This was Pakistan’s highest for any wicket in an ODI chase, and their highest against South Africa. This partnership registered as the fourth highest partnership in ODI chasing.
  • Explosive start by the openers: Fakhar Zaman (35 off 30) and Babar Azam (30 off 22) took the attack to Lungi Ngidi and Corbin Bosch to ease the pressure on other players and laid a brilliant foundation with a speedy 57 run opening partnership in just 6.1 overs.
  •  Milestones for Rizwan and Agha: During the 42nd over Rizwan reached his fourth ODI century (109 balls), while Agha arrived at his first ODI century (87 balls); in the same over their 200 run partnership was brought up too. Agha was very aggressive, and his play included several boundaries through extra cover and a 95-meter six off Wiaan Mulder that helped Pakistan remain ahead of the required tempo.
  • South Africa’s bowling problems: After striking early blows, the inexperienced bowling attack struggled to apply pressure. When Pakistan needed two runs, Lungi Ngidi (2/70) dismissed both Salman Agha and Babar Azam – Babar was reviewed after a caught-behind decision was made on a slower ball. Keshav Maharaj removed Saud Shakeel (8) 1/55 and Corbin Bosch took Fakhar Zaman 1/65. Senuran Muthusamy (0/36) and Tabraiz Shamsi (0/62) both conceded runs easily, and the conditions were not easy due to a dew and flat wicket.
  • Dramatic finish: Agha hit Shamsi for a six and a four and before we knew it, Pakistan needed just 10 runs off 12 balls. He was dismissed for 134 after a review caught behind, but Tayyab Tahir chased down the total with an over to spare, scoring the winning runs from his very first ball.

Key Moments

  • Bavuma was run out for 82 after a 119-run partnership with Breetzke after being hit directly by Saud Shakeel. After the dismissal, Saud Shakeel and Kamran Ghulam were condemned for celebrating too near Bavuma.
  • Heinrich Klaasen, who retired from batting for a thumb injury, scored 87 that included a 20-run over against Shaheen Afridi which had back-to-back sixes. Eventually, Naseem Shah caught him at long-on.
  • The fourth-wicket partnership of 260 runs between Rizwan and Agha was the largest South Africa had ever allowed, and Pakistan’s largest successful ODI chase in history–demonstrating Rizwan’s calmness at the crease to anchor the innings and Agha’s aggression, including a six over extra cover and many other fours.
  • When Pakistan needed just two runs, Salman Agha was caught behind for 134 off a secondary delivery from Lungi Ngidi, as confirmed by the UltraEdge review.  It was a whimper, because the crowd was expecting Agha to complete the chase.
  • After Agha’s dismissal, Tayyab Tahir came to bat and hit a four off Ngidi’s slower ball to seal the chase, bringing a huge celebration as Pakistan completed their record chase.

Conclusion

Pakistan reached its first ever final in the tri series against New Zealand on February 14, 2025 as they made a record chase of 353, highlighted by Mohammad Rizwan’s incredible 122 not out and an equally impressive 134 from Salman Agha.  The match created great anticipation for a thrilling Champions Trophy by showing South Africa’s lack of bowling depth and Pakistan’s depth in batting.  It was interesting to see South Africa coming into the tournament with six straight ODI defeats, but their top order of Bavuma, Breetzke and Klaasen looked good.
