The rivalry of SA VS NZ is very old and also very popular. It is full of memorable moments, historical matches and much more.

The competition between South Africa and New Zealand started in the 1930s when the proteas visited the black caps and NZ lost by an innings and 12 runs in their first ever

international match. The rivalry between NZ and SA increased with each and every match, where for a large period of time SA had an upper hand against NZ.

The First Meetings: ( 1930s to 1960s)

The first time SA met NZ was for a test match in the 1931-1932 test series. During this time most of theTest matches were won by SA but NZ gave them a tough fight.

  • 1931-1932 NZ VS SA: SA and NZ met for a two match test series in New Zealand in 1932. SA won the first match by an innings and 12 runs and the second match by eight wickets.

James Christy(103) and Bruce Mitchell (113) opened the innings and scored 451 runs. The second game was also won by SA by 8 wickets due to the help of

Xenophon Balaskas scored an not out 122 for SA, which proved to be important for SA’s win.

  • 1952-1953 NZ VS SA: After twenty years SA and NZ met again in New Zealand for a test series. Derrick McGlew contributed 255 and Anton Murray 109 leading to SA’s win by an innings and 180 runs. The second test was a draw.
  • 1953-1954 SA VS NZ: SA won the first series 4-0. SA won the first innings by an innings and 58 runs, second by 132 runs, 3rd by 9 wickets and 4th by 5 wickets.
  • 1961-1962 SA VS NZ: The 3rd test of the 5 match series was the most memorable match as it was the first win of NZ against SA. NZ scored 385 and 112, on the other hans SA scored 190 and 335. The Kiwis won the match by 72 runs, due to the efforts of Zin Harris ’ 101 in the first innings.However, the thing that is more memorable is Roy McLean’s runs of 113 in South Africa’s second innings.

Matches After South Africa’s Return in International Cricket: 1990s to 2010s

Although SA was banned from international cricket for around 30 years they were still a strong name in the field.

  • 1991-1992 Benson & Hedges World Cup: After SA return to international cricket in 1991 there 10th match was ODI international against NZ in Auckland. SA scored a total of 190 losing 7 wickets due to the help of Peter Kirsten(90). NZ chased the score in 34.3 overs losing 3 wickets.
  • 1994-1995 New Zealand Centenary Tournament: The 100th anniversary of NZ cricket counselling was celebrated in 1994 with this 4 teams ODI international series. The 6th match of the series was won by NZ by 46 runs. NZ scored 249 and stopped SA to 203.
  • 1998–1999 NZ VS SA: A three-match Test series between South Africa and New Zealand took place in New Zealand.  The third match was won by South Africa by 8 wickets, but the previous two ended in a draw.  
  • 2003 ICC World Cup: Using the D/L technique, New Zealand defeated South Africa by 9 wickets in the tournament’s thirteenth match. New Zealand’s goal was set at 226 runs from 39 overs because of a weather delay.  The Kiwis won because of an 134 runs from Stephen Fleming, who amassed 229 in 36.5 overs.
  • 2005–2006 South Africa vs. New Zealand: On October 21, 2005, the two titans of the world of international cricket faced off in Johannesburg for their first-ever Twenty20 International encounter.  After being asked to bat first, South Africa amassed 133 runs, with Graeme Smith scoring the most at 61. In just 18 overs, New Zealand had taken 5 wickets and reached the 134-run target.
  • South Africa vs New Zealand 2007–2008:  South Africa hosted a two-match Test series.South Africa won the first match by 358 runs, and second by 59.   Dale Steyn, Hashim Amla (176), and Jacques Kallis (186) were the key players that helped the Proteas win the first game with bowling figures of 5/34 and 5/59. In the second match, South Africa scored 383 runs compared to 188 for New Zealand.   But after being out for 136, the Kiwis lost by an innings and 59 runs. Dale Steyn won player of the match for his superb bowling, taking 4 and 6 wickets in the first and second innings, respectively.
  • 2009 ICC World Twenty20: South Africa won the tournament’s tenth game by a margin of one run.  Brendon McCullum (57) led the Black Caps in their run chase for 129, but their poor batting prevented them from reaching the goal and they were dismissed for 127.
  • 2011 ICC World CUP: New Zealand defeated South Africa by 49 runs in the third quarterfinal of the 2011 ICC World Cup, which took place in Dhaka.  With the help of Jacob Oram, who took four wickets and removed important players like Graeme Smith and Faf du Plessis, they managed to limit South African players to 172 runs while scoring 221 runs while losing eight wickets.  Additionally, Nathan McCullum claimed three wickets.

2010s to Recent Encounters

In earlier matches, the New Zealand cricket team was heavily dominated by the South African team. But after some time the New Zealand cricket team started to show very much improvement and then the New Zealand land team started to dominate the game and also the South African team.

  • 2011-2012 New Zealand v South Africa: In the test match between New Zealand and South Africa the first and third match was concluded as a draw and they won the second test match by a huge margin, they won by 9 wickets.
  • 2011-2012 New Zealand v South Africa: Then the New Zealand and South African team played 3 t20 matches and in these matches the New Zealand cricket team got their victory in the first match however they lost the other two matches to the south African giants.
  • 2015 ICC World Cup: In Auckland the New Zealand and South Africa played their first semi finals of World Cup in 2015 and the New Zealand cricket team won the world cup tournament due to rain.
  • 2016-2017 New Zealand v South Africa: ODI series of 5 matches and the South African team won this series by 3-2 and it was a very good series to watch where  the South African team won the 1st match , 3rd match and 5th match and the New Zealand cricket team won the other matches.
  • 2016-2017 New Zealand v South Africa: The two teams played their t20 match in Auckland and in this match the team of South Africa won the match by 78 runs where the south African team scored 185 runs.
  • 2023-2024 New Zealand v South Africa: New Zealand won the 2 match Test series by 281 runs in first and by 7 wickets in second. They confined the Proteas at 162 & 247 in the first match. South Africa in the second game had scored 242 and 235 in the first and second innings, respectively.
  • 2025 ICC Champions Trophy: Rachin Ravindra’s amazing performance led to New Zealand’s win by 50 runs with the support of Mitchell Santner and Kane Williamson.
