Mumbai Indians vs Punjab Kings Timeline

IPL 2008 – Punjab Kings Start With Two Wins

The rivalry started in the very first season of IPL. Punjab beat Mumbai in both the previous meetings.

Punjab won by 66 runs at Mohali on April 25. The second encounter was on May 21 at Wankhede and once you guessed it Punjab won again but this by one run.

So each win for Punjab in that opening season put them on the front foot in the face-off between these two teams, and a 2-0 record against Mumbai cemented their early lead atop this list.

IPL 2009 – Teams Split the Two Matches

In the 2009 IPL season in South Africa, the two sides met a further twice.

They first clashed at Kingsmead, Durban with Punjab edging that one by 3 runs. In the return fixture at SuperSport Park, Centurion, Mumbai reclaimed their superiority with an eight-wicket win.

The season concluded with the teams splitting a pair of wins.

IPL 2010 – Another 1–1 Season

The same two teams traded wins over a third match-up in 2010 as the Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab faced off against one another.

Mumbai beat Delhi by 4 wickets (30 March, Brabourne Stadium; Mumbai) On April 9, Punjab went to Mohali for the return fixture and won by six wickets.

It extended an early trend of the two teams mostly alternating wins on the year.

IPL 2011 – One of the Biggest Results in the Rivalry

Surprisingly, the first clash of 2011 was in favour of Mumbai, who triumphed by 23 runs on May 2 at the Wankhede. Then along came one of Punjab’s biggest ever wins against Mumbai, a return fixture at Mohali on May 10 that was won by 76 runs.

Statistically, the match is also relevant in that it represents the lowest all-out total by Mumbai against Punjab in this head-to-head. During the season’s competition, Munaf Patel returned 5/21 for Mumbai.

IPL 2012 – One Win Each

And, the same competitive pattern occurred in 2012 meetings.

In a match played on April 22, Punjab won the contest against Mumbai at Wankhede by six wickets while chasing down the target thanks to an unbeaten 68 from Shaun Marsh. Mumbai responded three days later in Mohali, defeating Punjab by four wickets after a late flourish from Ambati Rayudu and Robin Peterson.

In the IPL match report, Rayudu’s 34 not out and Peterson’s 16 not out were cited as crucial ingredients for Mumbai to taste success in chasing down the target successfully.

IPL 2013 – Two Close Games

The 2013 season did not have much of a contest on either side.

Mumbai had triumphed over Wankhede in the first game on April 29 by four runs. Defending the 139 runs total, Rohit Sharma not out at 79.

In the second match of 18 May, Punjab retaliated at Dharamsala with a victory by 50 runs. Punjab under the captaincy of Adam Gilchrist scored 183 and stopped Mumbai while chasing.

IPL 2014 – Mumbai Win Both Meetings

Mumbai was especially dominant in the corresponding direct matchup, one of their wins coming during 2014.

May 3: Mumbai beat Kings XI Punjab by five wickets at Wankhede. The win is vital because this was Mumbai’s opening victory of the 2014 season following a poor initial run.

The second match was held again on 21 May at Mohali. Mumbai chased down a target of 157, thanks to a brilliant century from Lendl Simmons which helped them win by seven wickets. He made 100 not out off 61 balls.

IPL 2015 – Another 1–1 Split

In their first meeting in 2015, Punjab beat Wankhede by 18 runs. Mumbai could not achieve the 177 after a late stand was formed between Harbhajan Singh and Jagadeesha Suchith.

On May 3, Mumbai then hit back at Mohali winning by 23 runs. Mumbai won the match over Punjab by 23 runs. Mumbai scored 172 with Lendl Simmons and Parthiv Patel adding opening partnership of 111 runs whereas bowlers bowled typically well to keep Punjab down to only 149/7.

IPL 2016 – Split Results Again

On April 25, Mumbai beat Mohali by 25 runs to win this year’s first meeting. Later, on May 13, Punjab triumphed in the reverse fixture at Visakhapatnam by seven wickets.

That consequently meant that the season ended with each side winning once more.

IPL 2017 – A High-Scoring Rivalry Highlight

One of the highlights in the Mumbai Indians vs Punjab Kings rivalry was, how one can forget the 2017 meetings between these sides.

April 20: Mumbai beat Punjab by eight wickets @Indore. This was followed by Punjab with a mammoth total of 230/3 at Wankhede on May 11, winning by seven runs.

IPL 2018 – Mumbai Win Both Matches

In 2018 as well, Mumbai Indians had a successful unbeaten season against Punjab.

Mumbai defeated Indore by six wickets at Indore on May 4 and then overcame Punjab by three runs at Wankhede on May 16.

The second game was also a close one which saw Mumbai defending a small total at the end of the chase.

IPL 2019 – One Win Each

Punjab started the 2019 head-to-head by winning by eight wickets at Mohali on March 30.

On April 10, Mumbai responded at Wankhede to claim a high-scoring chase by three wickets. In the previous meetings during the season, KL Rahul’s 100 of Punjab was included in an opening partnership of 116 runs with Chris Gayle.

IPL 2020 – The Famous Double Super Over

One of the most bizarre game happened in IPL history came during the 2020 matchup.

Mumbai made 176 for 6 in their full quota, while the Kings XI Punjab also ended on 176/6. This meant the match was to be decided in a Super Over.

That first Super Over was also balanced, both teams hitting five. It needed a second Super Over. Mumbai: 11/1 | Punjab: 15/0 (Chris Gayle hit one and Mayank Agarwal hits the winning boundary)

It was later recorded as two Super Overs in official IPL reports, and Punjab went on to win after the 44-over contest, which was described as extraordinary

Same with the match and that is why varied statistic databases and stuff always slight differently overall head-to-head numbers. There is also some controversy regarding the rating of this match, with bodies such as ACS registering it as a tie but others strictly based upon outcomes awarding victory to Punjab after the Super Over.

IPL 2021 – One Win Each

Once again, this 2021 season came out in a split result.

April 23: Punjab beat Mumbai by nine wickets at Chennai Mumbai then bounced back in the season but defeated Punjab by 6 wickets in Abu Dhabi on September 28.

Those two wins maintained the close nature of the overall rivalry.

The 2023 season brought another pair of entertaining games.

Punjab won the first match at Wankhede by 13 runs on April 22. Mumbai responded at Mohali on May 3 by chasing Punjab’s total and winning by six wickets.

The season again ended with the teams sharing the two victories.

Batting first, Mumbai managed 192/7 and in response, Punjab were all out for 183 at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur. Therefore Mumbai won by 9 runs.

It was yet another narrow margin, a result that follows the close scorelines that have often characterized this fixture.

IPL 2025 – Punjab Win Both Matches

Season 2025 was significant for this rivalry as both these teams met twice during the league stage and then crossed swords again in Qualifier 2.

On 26 May, Punjab had opened its IPL 2022 Main Event Series against Mumbai with a seven-wicket victory over the visitors at Jaipur. They faced each other again in Qualifier 2 on June 1 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Punjab rested Shikhar Dhawan for this game and while the chase didn’t turn out to be easy, they got it done by chasing down Mumbai’s 203/6 and winning with five wickets in hand. This win put Punjab into the final of IPL 2025.
